Lake Sumter State College plans new Science-Health Building

Nebraska-based architecture firm Leo A. Daly has designed the Clermont-based college’s new science-health building. The 51,000 square foot building has just broken ground, and is estimated to cost $11.6 million. When completed, the building will have labs for biology, microbiology, chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, anatomy, physiology and health sciences.

The new building also will support the demand from students wanting to take courses in science and health — fields that are in demand and create high-wage jobs. The college has had a lack of classrooms and labs for these courses. “Students will no longer have to drive 35-plus miles to the Leesburg campus to take lab courses,” Thom Kieft, dean of the South Lake Campus, said in a prepared statement.
