BAM (Black Architects in the Making) Orlando
BAM Orlando's Mission
To enhance and diversify the field of architecture by enticing, exciting, and encouraging students of color and minorities to pursue a career path within the architecture profession.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
- Nelson Mandela
The United States has produced relatively few black architects historically. A recent study conducted by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) documented that there are about 113,000 registered architects in the United States today. Since Black Americans make up 13% of our country’s population, we should expect around 14,000 black, registered architects. In fact, less than 2,200 architects are black, and of those, only 400 are black women.
BAM-O workshops are led by diverse professionals with the purpose of awakening students’ interest in Architecture and Design. The program aims to empower students to achieve their goals in pursuing a career in Architecture through mentorship and representation within the design industry.
The workshops are customized to suit the needs of students and the organizations hosting them. Workshops vary in topics, utilizing creative games, presentations, model-making, hands-on activities, as well as computer modeling.
The program incorporates field trips to architectural firm offices, notable buildings in the community, and museums. All trips are geared toward enhancing the students’ knowledge about the world of design and encourage them to choose Architecture as a career path. The trips also serve to better equip the students with connections and possible internship opportunities when it is time for them to go to college.

Inside Voices | Black Thoughts
In collaboration with NOMA South Florida, BAM Miami, NOMA Orlando, and AIA Orlando, BAM Orlando has developed a series of forums discussing the Black Experience in the Architecture and Design Professions. The "Inside Voices | Black Thoughts" Forum Series will be a platform where past and present Architects of Color will disseminate/share experiences, knowledge, and solution-based insight with emerging professionals(young architects), and prospective young black students that aspire to become future architects. Offering direction and connections with and inside-look at how to navigate the field of Architecture. What does it take to become an Architect in today’s world? The forum will also act as a lens for others to understand and gain perspective of minorities in the profession in hopes that sharing these experiences may influence change in the workplace. This platform will take a critical look into the call for diversity and inclusion over the last few years within the field of Architecture to assess whether or not it has been realized.
