The Historic Downtown Sanford Walking Tour

Stepping Through History: The Historic Downtown Sanford Walking Tour

On September 27, 2025, OFA and Sanford Experiences and Tours led a captivating journey through time with the Historic Sanford Walking Tour. With walking shoes laced and curiosity in full stride, participants explored the rich origins of Sanford—once Camp Monroe and Fort Mellon in the 1830s—strategically located on the southern shore of Lake Monroe at the headwaters of the St. Johns River.

We traced the city's transformation from its early days to its official incorporation in 1877, following Henry Shelton Sanford’s land purchase in 1870. Sanford’s legacy as a transportation hub came alive as we learned about the South Florida Railway, which made the city a vital gateway to Central and South Florida tourism.

Highlights of the tour included a stop at the beautifully restored Ritz Theater, where history and performance continue to intertwine. We also stepped inside the Sanford Masonic Lodge No. 62, currently undergoing a meticulous restoration to its original design. We were able to review the original blueprints.  Seeing the newly revealed windows from the building’s original construction was a powerful reminder of the city’s commitment to preserving its architectural heritage.

From historic landmarks to hidden gems, the tour offered a vivid glimpse into Sanford’s storied past—and its vibrant future.
