Through a Flowering Place’ film series & Cultural Events commemorating journeys to freedom undertaken by six inspiring women who lived and traveled Florida’s Underground Railroad. 

Susan July Horse - Susan married John Horse, the leader of the Black Seminoles, who was a famed warrior. Together they left central Florida area to Oklahoma. John was an interpreter for the Army and tried many times to secure land for the Black Seminoles. A group of Seminoles led by John's close friend, Coacho chee, joined John and Susan and their people on a secretive track to Texas and eventually Mexico where the Mexican President granted the Black Seminoles a reserved tract of land that remains today. This short film (in the ancient Seminole language shared by the Black Seminoles) explores the life of Susan as it was recorded by the numerous military journals and records associated with her husband John.

Romana Jacobo Biassou - Jorge Biassou was the architect of the original Haitian revolution in 1791. By 1796 Biassou pledged his loyalty to the Spanish and lost battles to the new French Republic in Haiti and his prior military colleague Touissant. Biassou, his family and his closest men were banished to La Florida. St Augustine was a Spanish colony of lower order and Romana had to learn how to live among a mix of people while her husband longed for a position of greater military rank. This short film in Creole (with English translation) explores the life of this little known woman who lived through the world's first successful slave rebellion with great consequences.
