Construction could start within the next few weeks on a planetarium that will be built into the front of the Museum of Arts & Sciences.
The west wing – the oldest part of the building – was badly flooded in 2009, and the museum has since received $4.4 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and $1.6 million from the county’s Environmental, Cultural, Historic and Outdoors program to rebuild.
Demolition of the west wing should take place next spring, so the museum will be able to minimize the downtime of the planetarium, Sandall said. That’s a priority because both the general public and schools use the planetarium, he said. VOA Associates designed the new additions, after studying the historic hexagonal galleries for flood mitigation and hurricane fortification.
