This year 5 New Central Florida buildings made the list:
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University College of Arts & Sciences in Daytona Beach, by Leo A. Daly Associates has a sweeping profile. The exterior and interior of this sleek, linear building took inspiration from the lines formed by the movement through space, air, and water along with aerodynamic materials and shapes. The Ash-dome telescope towers through each of the five floors of the facade. (above)
Cabana Beach Resort at Universal Orlando, is a 50’s Retro inspired design by Universal Creative, Schulman & Associates, Lindsay Pope Brayfield Clifford & Associates, & Daroff Design Inc. The 1,800-room hotel features 900 family suites with kitchens (capable of sleeping up to six people). Modernist elements such as the cantilevered slabs, lively colors, and punch outs on the façades, punctured roof projections, pylon stair towers, lush landscape and sweeping vistas immerse the guest in the nostalgic Mid-Century Modern era. Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center in Downtown Orlando designed by Barton Myers Associates, HKS Architects. The venue includes two grand performance halls (Walt Disney Theater seating 2,700+ people, and Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater seating 294), a community theater, outdoor plaza/performance space, rehearsal rooms, administrative offices and an educational programming space. Sweeping steel canopy sections crown the roofscape, expressing the rhythm and dynamics of stage performances. The transparent glass boxes composing the facade step to the beat as well. Alfond Inn in Winter Park by Baker Barrios Architects, a contrast of solid stucco facade to lacy wrought iron and faceted glass dome accents. Featuring 112 understated decor rooms, upgraded rooms offer separate living spaces, suites also include kitchens. Amenities include a casual restaurant and a modern bar, plus an outdoor pool and an exercise room. Zwart Learning Center in Kissimmee, by STOA Studios Architects has exterior facades sharing some craftman and mission styling. The two story building is the first structure on a new campus. The lobby was designed to be a light, open space with a direct visual connection to the garden playground behind the building. Along the interior corridors, each classroom ‘storefront’ has a unique color, providing a useful device for differentiating between spaces for younger and older children.
